All the Islands in the Cyclades have been adopted!
Location
Mykonos, between Tinos and Naxos, is 85 sq km with 81km of coastline. It is 110 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus in Athens.

Mykonos has an extremely scenic harbour, an attractive maze of white-washed houses in the main town, excellent sandy beaches and a dry but extremely dramatic, hilly interior

History
There is relatively little information about Mykonos' past as it was not considered to be particularly important in times gone by. It was dependant on Venice from 1207-1390 and in 1537 it was laid waste by Barbarossa and then taken over by the Turks, after which the islanders turned to piracy. From the late 1950's onwards Mykonos has seen continuous touristic development which has lead to its relative economic prosperity.

Religion
This topic is not island-specific. It applies to the nation of Greece.

Orthodox Christianity is the recognized dominant religion of Greece and it is legally protected by the state. This has caused legal discrimination against non-Orthodox Churches, and although the constitution of 1975 removed the power of most of the old laws against Protestants, problems still exist today. There is a lot of fear towards anything outside of the Orthodox Church, especially on the islands. However, repeated rulings of the European Court of Justice in favour of religious minorities in cases of discrimination have led to a relative increase of the freedoms that these religious minorities now enjoy.

Prayer
Although beautiful, Mykonos' town and beaches attract thousands of young foreign and Greek tourists every year. Therefore the atmosphere on the island, especially in the town at night, reflects the heavy presence of homosexuality and general sexual promiscuity and immorality practised on the island. Please pray, therefore...

For there to be a permanent Christian presence on the island, perhaps a young missionary couple or a small church of believers.

For wisdom in prayer, to break down the spiritual strongholds of perversion and homosexuality.

For islanders and young tourists to somehow have a revelation of the true and living Jesus and to accept him into their hearts and lives.

Miscellaneous
Look out for the Mykonos pelican, the island's mascot for almost half a century! The original pelican arrived in 1956 during a storm and today its successors can be seen wandering the town, usually near the waterfront being photographed by tourists!

Also don't miss 'Venice', the stunning row of colourful houses built in the water, giving the ship captains of former days direct access to the sea. On the ridge overlooking the houses is the row of famous windmills featured on many postcards of the town
