Population
In the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Kastelorizo was 15.000 inhabitants, but is now only 200. Most of them have migrated to Australia and Egypt, while the ones who stayed on the island live in Megisti. They are occupied mainly with fishing because the island is barren.

History
Remains in the area witness that the first inhabitants in Kastelorizo were from the Neolithic Age, followed by the Mycenae's and Dories, while in 530BC came under the occupation of Rodion. Afterwards came the Roman and Byzantium domination. In 1306, Kastelorizo came under the rule of the Knights of St. John, and in 1440 it was occupied by the Sultan of Egypt. The Turkish occupation began in 1521 until 1920, followed by the Italians. During the 1st and the 2nd World War it was heavily bombed, a fact that has left a lot of signs even until now.

Religion
This topic is not island-specific. It applies to the nation of Greece.

Orthodox Christianity is the recognized dominant religion of Greece and it is legally protected by the state. This has caused legal discrimination against non-Orthodox Churches, and although the constitution of 1975 removed the power of most of the old laws against Protestants, problems still exist today. There is a lot of fear towards anything outside of the Orthodox Church, especially on the islands. However, repeated rulings of the European Court of Justice in favour of religious minorities in cases of discrimination have led to a relative increase of the freedoms that these religious minorities now enjoy.
