Milos is located Southeast of Piraues and south of the islands Sifnos and Serifos. It has access from Sifnos and its main port is Adamas. The capital is Plaka.

Milos has a population of about 5000 and is 160 square kilometers in size. The locals live off of fishing and exporting minerals.

 History |
|
Milos was formerly connected to Kimolos, until a volcanic earthquake split the two. Milos has the oldest Neolithic settlement of the Cyclades, dating back to the 6th millennium BC. It was settled by Phoenicians and Cypriots who were attracted by its Obsidian, a black volcanic rock used to make tools. It was inhabited by the Dorians, and sided with the Dorian Spartans during the Peloponnesian war. Athenians castigated the Milians by killing the whole male population. In 1537, it was conquered by the Turks, who ruled until 1921, when the islands were liberated back to Greece.
Milos was the first of the Greek islands to be Christianized, and in the catacombs the skeletons of more than 2000 persons have been found. The catacombs were also used as a hiding place from persecutors of Christians, avenging Venetians and Turks, and also raiding pirates. Around that same time, the Romans built a theater there, which is still used from time to time today.

Orthodox Christianity is the recognized dominant religion of Greece and it is legally protected by the state. This has caused legal discrimination against non-Orthodox Churches, and although the constitution of 1975 removed the power of most of the old laws against Protestants, problems still exist today. There is a lot of fear towards anything outside of the Orthodox Church, especially on the islands. However, repeated rulings of the European Court of Justice in favour of religious minorities in cases of discrimination have led to a relative increase of the freedoms that these religious minorities now enjoy.

The Venus de Milo statue was found here in 1820. It was sold to the French, during Turkish rule, and lost her arms, before being put in the Louvre, Paris, by Louis XVIII.
The Catacombs are one of the best preserved Christian monuments in the world and date back to the 1st century.
There is a Roman Theatre with performances in August.
In Loutra Provata there are Roman mosaics, and, also fresh waters thought to cure rheumatism.
In Mandrakis, the waters of Tsillorneri to therapeutic to clear the system.
Located in Demenayaki are some obsidian mines
